a panic attack is your bodys “fight or flight” reaction kicking in. the only difference is that its not considered rational at the moment that it happens. say you are walking in the jungle and a lion jumps out in front of you, thats the fight or flight reaction having a purpose. i have panic attacks, i know how you feel. no one ever died from a panic attack even though it can make you feel like it. if you need couseling try http://www.onestepatatime.com or if you just want someone to talk to you can talk to me. kristeena911@yahoo.com Good luck!

There are meds you can take for them. Or different techniques to calm down. You should look into specific classes that help you with attacks. And like I said before, its controllable. Just go to your doctor.

Hey tknocko, I have seen so many questions about panic attacks on here just this wk.!! Makes me wonder what up with everyone. I know how you feel I suffer from them too. Im just getting over a long 3 mnths of having them. 3 mths, doesnt sound long but it feels like forever. Tell you what, when I had my attacks, I wasnt sure what was causing them, and I still dont know what did. My Dr. said I had “floating anxiety” or “floating depression”. It would come and go. Most of the times it felt like it never left at all. I try to surround myself with things that make my happy. Try smiling even when you dont feel like it. Talk to a friend that has had the same thing. Panic attacks make you feel like youre going to die because it sends signals to your brain, like if you need to defend yourself. So your adrenaline starts pumping and it feels scary at times. Try to take it easy. Im not a Dr. or a psychologist but I do suffer fromthem also. You know 90% of the things we woory about never ever happen? Think about it. How many different times have you worried and the thing you worried about never happened. What a waste huh? I spent lots of days worrying about crazy things, stupid things and they never happened. You cant spend you days being scared, its not living. Ive said that several times. But try to take care of yourself, ok? I hope you get to feeling better. Dont expect your fears to leave you in one day, just dont fuel them anymoe or theyll get worse. Later, Sonia

I suffer from panic attacks here and there sometimes. were I just feel like my heart chould just give up anytime. Yah its scary. the pain is so close to your heart. but all it is, is glass going through thats why it hurts so much. Because you feel like your going to die, because you have trouble breathing and your heart beats harder and faster and your chest gets all tight.
This is how I made mine go away. When I got them I didnt know when they would come and go so I always had to be ready for them no matter what. when It started actting up. I just took long breaths in and out very slowly and just try to relax. I after a while it started to get better. All it is. is Gass. and by breathing. Releases it. I dont know its wierd. but after things started getting better. but I knew not to make any fast movements after or it would happen again…
a good thing for this is to go see your docotor. Tell him what going on and when it starts and when it stops. And were it hursts. He will help you get your panic attacks under control.
Good luck and hope things get better.

I have panic disorder which means I am so terrified of them I make myself have one if I get in the same situation where a previous one took place…they also make you think you’re going crazy and they are embarrassing for me. I take lexapro and xanax and I am a lot better now.

In such moments you think you’re going to die because you are afraid to lose your life most of all. Next time remember the previous time you had a panic situation and remember that you didn’t die ;)

Hi,
I am sure you do hate them! I suffered from panic attacks when I was put on a certain SSRI to treat a period of depression. It was a side effect of the drug (unknown then) and caused me to have panic attacks in crowds or on buses/the metro (i.e it made me claustrophobic). I lost count of the number of times I had to take a taxi home because I was on the verge of losing control in public and ran away rather than give in to it. Yet I had to work and to be able to do this, I needed to continue my meds.
I HAD to overcome my fears.
How did I get over it? I told myself ‘what is the worst that could happen if I gave into my fears in public’? You see, my panic wasn’t just about claustrophobia. It was about how other people would perceive me if I gave into my fear in public. I am normally a pretty together, controlled woman yet this condition drove me to the point of madness. The thought of melting down in public was, frankly, unthinkable. I almost became a recluse due to my fears. Anyway, soon after I asked myself that question, I decided ’sod it, I WILL give into my fear’.
And do you know, the minute I gave myself permission to meltdown in public, the fear and panic lost its grip on me! I will not pretend it was easy. I stepped off the bus and train many a time because it got to be too much. But once I realised what was causing my panic, I ensured I put myself near exits (because of my claustrophobia) on the trains, buses, whatever. I forced myself to go into small shops, then larger shops at busy times. I went into central London to go to stores rather than go to the stores near me and practised breathing and calming techniques, all the while allowing myself to FEEL the panic.
It did not kill me. It will not kill you either.
Give yourself permission to do whatever you need to do to get through the day. Give into your fears but exert control over WHEN you give into them. If you pick the situations in which this happens, the worst that could happen (as far as your reputation is concerned) is people look at you a bit funny! But tell yourself this – the majority of people who might witness you in this situation are unknown to you. Their opinions do not matter and you really don’t care what they think. And do not put additional pressure on yourself by trying to bottle up what you are feeling in front of people you know. Share what is going on with those who ARE known to you (NOTE: only those who are friends!).
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has demonstrated that if you expose yourself to your fears, you diminish them. CBT worked for me (without formal training). I made the decision to do this for myself because, like you, I was sick of living with panic attacks. Start by letting your fears out in controlled situations then let little bits of your fears out in public – but in situations of YOUR choosing.
And trust me – as you expose these fears, they WILL lose their power over you, especially if you keep telling yourself that you don’t CARE if people see you hyperventillating/sweating/crying/whatev…

the reason why you feel as if you are going to die is because it mimics a heart attack and you feel as if you are having a heart attack. Panic attacks are forms of stress. First thing that needs to be done is put you on meds, next is to figure out why you are having them. There is some underlying issue that is making you have them. Carry a paper bag around for those sudden panic attacks, when you have one breath into the bag it will help you come down from it.

the important thing is to try and regulate your breathing, using a brown paper bag is very good…It stops you hyperventilating, by rebreathing air straight back in to your lungs. The physical symptoms are very real, it can manifest itself in many ways.

When you start to panic over something chemicals are realised which make you start to breathe too much and get a higher amount of oxygen in your body than it prefers.
The body’s natural instinct when it’s breathing is affected is to become alarmed (that sensation that you are going to die) to warn you it is in danger so that you can do something to protect yourself.
That is why people having a panic attack are often given a paper bag to breathe through so that they rebreathe some of the air they’ve just expelled and so reduce the amount of oxygen going in.

Yes, sometimes they do make you feel you are going to die. You need to seek professional help and get on an anti-anxiety medicine. Try using relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, soak in a warm bubble bath, do yoga/pilates stretches, go for walks or work out….get enough sleep and eat well. If something at home is causing stress, do something to solve the problem. Good Luck.

Basically, you think your gonna die when you have a panic attack because your adrenalin is pumping hard and it gives you a feeling of light-headedness and you feel like your about to catch on fire.my mom suffers from the same thing. The best thing to do is to lay down take slow deep breaths and put a cold rag with ice on your head or behind your neck.

Go see a psychiatrist who can prescribe you good anti-anxiety medication, such as Lexapro.
