Buspar is often used to treat anxiety attacks. It works by reducing the amount of serotonin (a neurotransmitter) in the brain. But be careful. Some doctors will prescribe Buspar AND an antidepressant. Most of the newer antidepressant work to INCREASE serotonin levels. Conflicting medications like this can cause some serious side effects.
hey…wow, i seen your question and i knew i had to answer…I suffer from anxiety attacks, and i know how awfully horrible they are…Drink something warm, allow yourself to cry, hold yourself and rock back and forth, call one of your closest friends right away, b/c its hard to control your own thoughts when having an anxiety attack and if you start to think something suicidal or smn like that, they will be there to help you sort through your thoughts. i usually call a friend right away and they talk me through it, or i just talk until i feel like ive gotten everything out… and then i work on taking deep breaths and then i make myself comfortable and drink hot chocolate. This will all help you with the hyperventillating, and the gagging and all the other fun stuff that comes along with anxiety attacks…But, these things wil only take temporary pain away. Work on a relationship with God, if you do not already have one. I gaurentee you that my relationship with god is what really saves me every time and i know he can do the same for you…Take care and i hope i could help!!!!!! and just remember its not your fault…
What I feel when I’m going through this is fear stricken, panic, scared, and overwhelmed. Its really effecting my life where I’m scared to do things that I HAVE to do. First off, consider medication. Unless you have specific reasons for not wanting medication, it can be very helpful in reducing anxiety/panic attacks. Much anxiety is caused by a lack of sufficient “happy” brain chemicals, and medication is effective at raising those chemicals and making you feel more normal. I use Xanax and can testify to its effectiveness.
That said, anxiety and panic attacks can be helped by other means. Other people have suggested meditation, which is helpful. Also try getting a book on relaxation techniques, and try “The Anxiety Cure” by Archibald Hart.
The thing about anxiety is that it is irrational, and you need to be able to understand what it is that is making you uncomfortable. The above two books can help you identify the source of your anxiety, which will make it easier to treat.
alprazolam (Xanax) panic, generalized anxiety, phobias, social anxiety, OCD
clonazepam (Klonopin) panic, generalized anxiety, phobias, social anxiety
diazepam (Valium) generalized anxiety, panic, phobias
lorazepam (Ativan) generalized anxiety, panic, phobias
oxazepam (Serax) generalized anxiety, phobias
chlordiazepoxide (Librium) generalized anxiety, phobias
His attacks are so severe he almost passes out has numbness and tingling in his face and hands racing heartbeat sweats chest pain tightening he is 29 and currently has no insurance at present, is he at risk for a stroke or heart attack He is also suffering from insomnia is that part of the anxiety?
I’d suggest that you first see a certified mental health professional to find the right medication. Medication should be under expert care and yahoo answers is not the appropriate place to get the answers. Though people here have the very best intention to help you, mental health is something that needs expert supervision. So, I suggest that you visit a professional.
It is very hard but it is possible. Anxeity is all about how we reinforce our own fears. When we feel like we are about to have a panic attack we will run from the situation, telling our mind that there is something to be scared of. Which of course the next time you put yourself in that situation you are guarenteed to freak out. The only way to really reverse how you feel is to go to the situations that make you uncomfortable and deal with the panic. Accept it, say ok I might have a panic attack but thats ok, I am not going to be in any danger, nothing bad is going to happen from this panic attack and be ready for it. Believe me I know they are extremely uncomfortable but you have to learn to accept them and when you show your mind that there is nothing to be scared of everything will ease off. It does take a lot of time and it certainly is hard but if you want to overcome this and you are tired of living in fear it is time to give yourself the extra push you need. NOTHING bad can happen from a panic attack except you being scared and i think that is one thing we all forget when we are in the situation. I ended up letting my anxiety take over and I became agoraphobic. It was horrible and just now I am able to push myself and I do. Even if I only allow my self to be in that situation for 2 minutes. I am not avoiding them anymore. But you need to be encouraged and you need to be complimented and when you went somewhere, even if for only 30 seconds, you did awesome and you need to acknowledge the good in what you are doing. Don’t be to hard on yourself. good luck to you.
Why is it that some people need medication to control their anxiety? Is it because the person is mentally not strong enough? Why do some people choose to press the panic button so quickly? Does anxiety go away as you get older and gain confidence and experience?
