Does Anyone Else Have Bad Panic Attacks?

The other day I had a very intense panic attack and I felt like I was losing my mind for a minute. My life is good although there is some underlying stress, but having a panic attack because of this stress is not logical, but it just happens. What are some things I can do to try to avoid/prevent these horrible things?

I’m sorry to hear this – panic attacks are one of the most frightening things you can go through. The good news is that a large percentage of the population will experience at least one panic attack in their life, so you are by no means alone.
I used to have really bad and frequent panic attacks. They started last year because someone I knew died (young and seemingly healthy). Then every time I thought of death – by reading the news, or thinking about illness… basically anything that could be related to less-than-perfect health – I got another one. This happened multiple times a day.
Luckily after a few months they started to slow down, so now they barely happen. I did go to a counselling session to learn what to do in order to counteract the panic attack:
1. Sit up straight in a chair, in a normal seating position. Imagine your lungs extend down to your groin.
2. Breathe in very slowly for six counts.
3. Pause for a long moment.
4. Breathe out very slowly for eight counts.
5. Pause for a long moment, and then repeat steps 2-5.
This can be effective, but at other times it doesn’t work.
The best therapy for me is to watch a fun movie (Back To The Future or Weird Science always works for me) to take my mind of whatever is causing me to panic – and I find I calm down within minutes. Good luck!
